In the tranquil setting of Upper Kangaroo Valley with surprise waterfalls glistening above emerald green paddocks and native cedars saluting with bursts of new foliage, a crowd gathered to pay tribute to the late Blue Mountains poet Denis Kevans. Known as Australia's Poet Lorikeet, Denis was a prolific writer and activist committed to social, political and environmental justice.
A selection of Denis' songs and poems were shared with an appreciative audience in the community hall in Upper Kangaroo Valley. The hall is just a stones throw away from the old school house where Denis wrote several poems and songs during his many holidays there.
Talented performers from the Shoalhaven, the Blue Mountains, Sydney, Tasmania and even Ireland came to be part of the tribute and included singers Sonia Bennett and Loosely Woven, Margaret, Bob and Kate Fagan, Kerrie Maguire, Margaret Walters and Irishman Enda Kenny. A selection of Denis Kevans poems were also performed by Blue Mountains poets Wyn Jones, Brian Bell and Gregory North, as well as Vic Jefferies, Carl Leddy and Denis' nephew Keiran Kevans.
The evocative images, poetic insights and calls for action throughout the works of Denis Kevans were showcased by the adoring performers brought together by Denis' daughter Sophia in the beautiful valley setting and will be remembered fondly by all who attended. Although Denis is sorely missed, his works live on as a reminder of the importance of fairness, equity and environmental stewardship in all our lives.
